Obama To Make It Harder For LEGAL Immigrants To Get Hired

According to the Wall Street Journal,
The harm in penalizing employers for hiring illegal immigrants is that it will make employers hesitant to hire anyone that could be an illegal immigrant. This would make Hispanics, in general, less desirable to employers. Since it can be hard to verify the citizenship of a person, Hispanics would be of greater risk to an employer, while a white kid with a Boston accent probably did not come from Latin America. As well, verifying that an employee is a legal citizen puts an added cost on the employer. Legal immigrants and employers should not be punished for the government's (misguided and failed) attempt to control who comes into the country.
The Obama administration announced a crackdown Wednesday on hundreds of companies suspected of employing illegal immigrants, signaling a shift in strategy: going after employers instead of workers.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a unit of the Department of Homeland Security, said that it had begun an audit of 652 U.S. companies to verify whether their employees were eligible to work. Violations could lead to fines, as well as civil and criminal charges.
